It’s a strange feeling when you look at your life and wonder how you got here. You vaguely recall having some idea of what life would look like. However, you never really got beyond that stage. Plans and goals were for others. You prefer to go with the flow and see what life sends your way. How’s that working for you? Have you lost your way now because there was no real direction at the very beginning?
I talk about this a lot. We function best when we have purpose. Indeed, we generally seem to feel better about our lives when there is direction. Firstly, it helps us make sense of what we’re doing now. What we’re doing now leads to the next step, and then the next, and so on.
Secondly, it gives us something to measure our happiness, our eudaimonia, against. We planned the steps, firm in the belief that we would enjoy the journey and the end state. If it feels good, we know we’re on track. If it feels less good, we recognise that we may want to re-evaluate and possibly change course.
Finally, when life throws a curveball, we know that underneath it all we have a plan, a destination in mind. This helps us understand that setbacks can be, and frequently are, temporary glitches that we can overcome. Indeed, knowing that we have a plan can give us the strength and determination to resolve the issues, and move forward.
Crucially, it is never too late to find your purpose. Fortunately, you can step back and work out where you want to be at any time. You can do it now if you want. Or you can drift in whichever way the mood, life, the universe takes you. Again, I ask, have you lost your way now because there was no real direction at the very beginning?
Importantly, contrary to what some of the sceptics believe, making plans and having goals increases choice. It focuses the mind. It gives the unconscious mind the direction it craves. Suddenly, you are seeing new possibilities and routes to success. Opportunities and choices come into your awareness in a way which didn’t happen before. Additionally, you remain open to whatever comes your way. Those blinkers which you thought would limit you simply don’t appear. You are doing and being more, all because you made a plan, set a goal, and took action.
So, if you’re ready, do it now. Make the plans and set the goals. Follow this up with action. If you’re not sure, book an initial consultation here, and then take the next step. You know that you can do it and you know that it makes sense, don’t you?
