A nail and a screw, both partially driven into a piece of wood. A hammer is hitting the screw and an adjustable spanner is attempting to deal with the nail. Poor decisions all round

If everything in life is a choice, why are you sticking with the choices that you know could be better?

A woman, with her hands over her face, regretting the decisions she has madeWhile at times it may not feel like it, everything in life really is a choice. Obviously, not all of the options open to us are great, and at times it can feel like picking the lesser of two, or more, evils. Even in the darkest of moments when it feels like all is lost, Viktor Frankl rightly observes that you can still choose how to react to the situation. The reality is that we are making choices all of the time. Consequently, it should be that if we’re making choices, we’re always choosing the best option, however we define that. This, in turn, means that we’re happy and content. Yet lots of us are not. So, if everything in life is a choice, why are you sticking with the choices that you know could be better?

Let’s be clear. I don’t think many of us set out to make poor choices. Indeed, some would argue that all choices are the right choices in any given moment. And yet, they are not. We hold ourselves back. We make choices with limited information. Limiting beliefs and unresolved negative emotions from the past stop us seeing options and possibilities. Additionally, we judge ourselves and worry about what others will say. Our comfort zones can be just that; comfortable. Who in their right mind would want the discomfort of change?

Two high fences with rolls of razor wire in between, making an insurmountable barrierIt’s also easy to be at effect. This is my lot. People like me don’t do more. We know our place. This, whatever this is, is an unmoveable barrier. They, whoever they are, won’t let me or like me if I change. The list goes on. Sound familiar? How many excuses have you made over the years to stay where you are? How often have you felt stuck and justified that feeling with reasons that you know don’t add up?

Two people, one in the distance and one in the foreground, walking in deep snow in a mountain scene. They are rising to the challenge.Change is a challenge. We sometimes make choices for the easy life. And, of course, there are times when the right choice is just that because of other choices we have made.

Take a moment to review where you are, because you’ve got to where you are as a result of the choices you have made. Conversely, you may not have made all of the choices, but it was a choice to let others make the decision. If life is great where you are, carry on doing what you’re doing. However, if you suddenly realise that there are better choices to make, make them now. If you’re not sure, book a free consultation here, and then take the next step. You know that you can do it, and you know that it makes sense, don’t you?
